Lotta Gelata

The highlight yesterday had to be our meals. Because there isn’t a proper market inside the walls of Lucca, and because we never ventured outside the walls yesterday, we ate out. Lunch was the most amazing prosciutto and marscapone pizza ever. Fia and I shared it and she loved it as well. It should be noted that I have eaten prosciutto every single day since arriving in Italy and am well on my way to bringing home an additional ten pounds of weight!

Vinny doesn’t like the pizza here … can you imagine? He’s found a breaded chicken panini served on foccacia that he likes, so he isn’t starving. That, and months ago when we started talking about this trip I had told him about the gelato and the fact that he could eat it every day while in Italy. He has held me to that and has taken to collecting the little colorful plastic gelato spoons.

After our afternoon siesta, we didn’t venture out for dinner until 7:30pm. It took over an hour to find a proper dinner locale that wasn’t just a pizzeria and wasn’t either ridiculously expensive or simply not an appropriate venue for small children. At the point of nearly giving in and settling for pizza - as if we can actually "settle" for pizza in Italy - we happened upon a random trattoria off the beaten path that was chefs kiss perfecto!

The kids shared the most amazing ravioli bolognese I have ever tasted. We will definitely eat there again so that I can order those for myself!! I had a fabulous safron and prosciutto (shocking!) risotto and Hugh had an extremely moist and flavorful pork shank. Mmmmmm.

Once again during dinner Fia serenaded the crowd with song, this time egged on by her dad. She made up her own song to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star called “I Like a Lotta Gelatta”.

This morning the first thing on our to-do list is to head outside the walls in search of a market so we can go lighter on the food today!!!
